(انظر disestablishmentarianism). قال أستاذ اللاهوت ديفيد كانهام إنه يجب إبقاء الكنيسة والدولة منفصلتين، وإلا فإنهما ستعانيان (بالطبع، ستتحد الاثنتان تمامًا عندما يأتي المسيح ثانية ليملك على الأرض، لكنه حاكم كامل! لستُ مهتمًا بالثيوقراطية قبل تلك المرحلة!). كان إدماج الكنيسة والدولة تحت حكم قسطنطين إحدى أعظم المآسي في تاريخ الكنيسة التي أدَّت إلى فساد الكنيسة على الفور تقريبًا وأدت كذلك إلى توترات مستمرة بين الكنيسة والدولة طوال العصور الوسطى.
