فيما يتعلق بعقيدة المسيح (الكريستولوجيا)، يؤكد هذا المصطلح أن للابن طبيعة أو جوهر مختلفة عن طبيعة الآب، ومن ثم، هو ليس الله بالكامل. نَحت هذا المصطلح أنصارُ الأريوسية للتعبير عن اعتقادهم بأن الابن ليس إلهًا بالكامل لأنه مختلف عن الآب في الجوهر (انظر أيضًا Homo-ousios).
