عبارة لاتينية مصدرها أنسيلم في كتابه Proslogion "مقال في وجود الله"، واستُخدمت لبيان علاقة الإيمان الديني بالتفكير أو العقل البشري. بالنسبة إلى أنسيلم لا تُفهم القضايا الدينية واللاهوتية إلا بعد تصديقها أولًا ومن ثم الانتقال إلى الخطوة التالية وهي تحصيل فهم عقلي للأمور التي أومن بها بالفعل. بتعبير آخر، الإيمان يأتي أولًا -منطقيًّا وزمنيًّا- قبل العقل.
