ويُطلق عليه أيضًا اللاهوت العهدي (انظر covenant theology). يقول اللاهوت الفيدرالي إن آدم بصفته الإنسان الأول، قام بدور "الرأس أو الرئيس الفيدرالي (من اللاتينية foedus معناها عهد، معاهدة، اتفاق، تحالف) أي الممثِّل القانوني لكل الجنس البشري. يرتبط الفكر اللاهوتي الفيدرالي بأعمال يوهانس كوكسيوس Johannes Cocceius (1603 – 1669)
