مبادرة الله الكريمة بالنيابة عن البشر. عمل الله الكريم الظاهر في شخص المسيح وعمله الذي يكون حاضرًا في حياة الإنسان بواسطة الروح القدس. هذا العمل يسبق كل التجاوبات (ردود الفعل) البشرية تجاه مبادرة الله. يراها الكالفينيون باعتبارها جانب من نعمة الله الخاصة بها يفدي الله المؤمن ويقدِّسه ويمجده. ومن ثم لا تُمنح إلا للمختارين للحياة الأبدية بالإيمان بيسوع المسيح. ويقول ويسلي (وبالتبعية، العديد من الأرمينيين) إن النعمة الاستباقية هي عمل الروح القدس في قلوب المؤمنين، وهو العمل الذي يعطيهم حرية أن يقولوا نعم لرسالة الإنجيل (يقبلوها)؛ ومن ثم يمكن للنعمة الاستباقية أن تُقبل أو تُرفض، غير أن التبرير لا يمكن تحقيقه من دون هذه النعمة الاستباقية.
