هو الاعتقاد بأن الله لا يسيطر على الكون بطريقة محكمة ودقيقة، ولكنه يترك الأمر"مفتوحًا" للبشر لاتخاذ خيارات مهمة (حرية الإرادة) تؤثر في الأحداث التاريخية والمستقبلية. بناء عليه، الله لا يعرف المستقبل على نحو شامل. يرفض هذا الفكر اللاهوتي الرأي الكلاسيكي عن ثبات الله وعلمه الكلِّيِّ، ومن ثَمَّ يؤمن بأن الله ينمو في معرفته، ويكتشف أمورًا لم يكن يعرفها، ويغيِّر رأيه. خاطَرَ الله بخلق بشر لا يمكنه بالضرورة أن يعرف مسبقًا كيف سيتصرفون.
