بحسب اللاهوت العهدي، تأسَّس عهد الأعمال بين الله الثالوث وآدم. وفي هذا العهد جعل الله من آدم الرأس الممثِّل للجنس البشري، حتى يتصرَّف آدم بالنيابة عن كل ذريته. بدأ عهد الأعمال في الفترة ما بين الخلق وسقوط الإنسان. في هذا العهد طالَبَ الله آدمَ بطاعة ضمنية ومطلقة.[20]
