بحسب اللاهوت العهدي، أقام الله عهد النعمة بسبب نقض آدم لعهد الأعمال. ويعرِّف بيركهوف عهد النعمة بأنه "ذلك الاتفاق المبني على النعمة بين الله الكريم الذي صدر الخطأ بحقه، وبين الخاطئ مرتكِب الخطأ ولكنه مختار، الذي فيه يَعِدُ الله بالخلاص من خلال الإيمان بالمسيح، ويَقبل الخاطئ هذا العرض بالإيمان متعهِّدًا بأن يحيا حياة الإيمان والطاعة."[19]
