وفقًا لبيركهوف، تأسَّس عهد الفداء بين الله الآب والله الابن. وفي هذا العهد وهب الآب للابن أن يكون رأس المختارين وفاديهم. وفي المقابل، وافق الابن طوعًا على أن يأخذ مكان أولئك الذين أعطاهم الآب له. بدأ عهد الفداء في الأزل. ولأن الله كان يعلم أن الإنسان سيرتد عنه ويسقط، قضى في الأزل أن يمنح الفداء للمختارين خلال المجرى الزمني للتاريخ.[18]
