الاعتقاد بأن بعض البشر على الأقل سيتوقف وجودهم بشكل دائم عند الموت أو في مرحلة ما بعد ذلك. الاعتقاد بأن الأشرار (غير المخلَّصين) سوف يدينهم الله في الدينونة الأخيرة، وسيُلقون في بحيرة النار، حيث سيزولون من الوجود. فيما يتعلق بعقيدة الأخرويات "الأيام الأخيرة" هو الرأي الذي مفاده أنه بعد الموت سيهلك الأشرار عقابًا لهم على خطاياهم. وتتضمن الأدلة المؤيدة لهذا الرأي عبارة "هلاك أبدي" في (2 تسالونيكي 1: 9) فيما يتعلق بمصير الأشرار، و(2) صورة النار البلاغية: العنصر المهلِك، ارتباطًا بالجحيم؛ و(3) مبدأ أن بما أن العقاب يجب أن يلائم الجريمة، فإنه سيكون من القسوة والظلم المعاقبة بالهلاك الأبدي، ومن ثم ربما سيهلك الأشرار في نهاية المطاف بعد عقاب محدود. يقول موقف الكنيسة التاريخي إن الأشرار سيختبرون عقابًا في الجحيم وهم في كامل وعيهم، وقد شمل هذا الموقف دومًا رفضًا لفكرة الإفناء.[2]
