اقتضى الناموس الموسوي إجراء عملية إزالة الغرلة (القلفة أو جلد الذكر "القضيب") لكل ذكر يهودي في اليوم الثامن بعد ولادته، وقد كان الختان علامة على العهد الإبراهيمي. صار الختان هو الفعل الخارجي (الظاهر) الذي يدل على دخول جماعة الإيمان في العهد القديم. كذلك كان الختان يُجرى على الأمميين الدخلاء (الأمم المهتدين إلى الديانة اليهودية). وفقًا للعهد الجديد أُبطل الختان المادي الخارجي في الجسد وحل محله ختان روحي للقلب (رومية 2: 29).
