في جميع أجزاء الكتاب المقدس، يرتبط الصوم في الغالب بالامتناع عن الطعام لفترة زمنية محدَّدة من أجل طلب الله. وقد يشمل المبدأ الأساسي للصوم أيضًا الامتناع عن أي نشاط أو حدث أو متعة زمنية من أجل الاقتراب من الله – الابتعاد عن الرفقة لقضاء الوقت مع الله على انفراد؛ أو الإحجام عن النوم لقضاء الليل في الصلاة؛ أو الامتناع عن عمل أو هواية أو تسلية معينة لتخصيص وقت لله.[34]
