يشير المصطلحان إلى جانبين للإيمان المسيحي: الجانب الداخلي والجانب الخارجي. تشير عبارة fides qua creditur هو الوسيلة التي يُقبل بها إعلان الله لذاته (أي ممارسة الثقة في الله كموقف أو توجه داخلي)، في حين تشير عبارة fides quae creditur إلى المحتوى الفعلي أو مضمون ما قد أعلنه الله (أي القبول العقلي لتصريحات وبيانات معيَّنة عن الله). تدل عبارة Fides qua creditur على مسألة كيف يؤمن المرء بالله، في حين تدل عبارة fides quae creditur على مسألة ما الذي يؤمن به المرء عن الله.
