شعور المرء بأنه ملزَمٌ بفعل الصواب وتجنُّب الخطأ؛ وبحسب بعض الآراء، هو مَلَكة افتراضية في الطبيعة البشرية. هو الجزء غير المنظور في الإنسان الذي يعمل كالمنبِّه الأخلاقي الذي يرشده إلى فعل الصواب وتجنب الخطأ طبقًا لمعايير قد غُرسهت في الإنسان في التربية البيتية والدينية. يَعتبر رونالد مكيون الضمير هو البُعد الأدبي لصورة الله المغروسة في الإنسان. كذلك يقول إن الإنسان قادر على ترويض الضمير بحسب المقاييس التي أعطيت له.
